West Texas Birds

There are two main areas that I bird in the West Texas region, they are Big Bend National Park and the Davis Mountains.  Both areas have many species that can only be found in this part of Texas.  West texas is very productive in the Summer months, when other parts of the state can be slow.  This part of Texas also can have a number of very rare birds for the United States, many accidentals show up here every year.  Here are some birds of interest in West Texas.

Western Grebe- Common to uncommon resident.

Clark's Grebe- Uncommon resident.

Gray Hawk- Rare summer resident.

Common Black-Hawk- Rare summer resident.

Zone-Tailed Hawk- Uncommon summer resident.

Ferruginous Hawk- Uncommon winter resident.

Golden Eagle- Uncommon winter resident, rare in summer.

Prairie Falcon- Uncommon to rare winter resident, rare in summer.

Band-Tailed Pigeon- Uncommon summer resident, rare in winter.

Greater Roadrunner- Fairly common resident.

Western Screech-Owl- Uncommon resident.

Elf Owl- Fairly common summer resident.

Flammulated Owl- Uncommon to rare and local summer resident.

Lesser Nighthawk- Common summer resident.

Common Poorwill- Common summer resident, rare in winter.

White-Throated Swift- Fairly commmon summer resident, uncommon in winter.

White-Eared Hummingbird- Rare summer resident.

Broad-Billed Hummingbird- Rare summer resident.

Blue-Throated Hummingbird- Uncommon to rare summer resident.

Magnificent Hummingbird- Uncommon to rare summer resident.

Lucifer Hummingbird- Uncommon summer resident.

Broad-Tailed Hummingbird- Common summer resident.

Acorn Woodpecker- Common resident.

Red-Naped Sapsucker- Common winter resident.
